APPLICATIONS · PRODUCED WATER — FPSO & OFFSHORE

FPSO produced water treatment. More separation. Less deck.

Discharge-clean through the upsets — in a footprint an FPSO can afford.

Why gravity is not enough

The emulsion your separator train cannot break

Produced water typically carries up to 1,000 ppm hydrocarbon continuously and to 50,000 ppm during upsets; even 100 ppm slipping through a conventional system is 26,280 gallons of hydrocarbon a year into downstream equipment — and lost revenue . The hazy, emulsified fraction needs weeks of gravitational disengagement time, which no offshore residence tank has . On an FPSO, the answer cannot be a bigger tank — deck space and topside weight rule it out.

Hydrocarbon recovery technology

HRT® — recover the oil instead of discharging it

HRT couples the ProcessOR vessel design and coreless solids filtration with high-performance liquid-liquid coalescing. It is modular and scalable — sized for new topsides or retrofitted into an operating unit — and needs minimal operator intervention .

New — containerized

Pure Pack: produced water treatment in a container

Pentair’s Pure Pack packages produced-water treatment into a containerized, remotely monitored unit — delivering outlet quality below 50 mg/L at an operating cost around US$0.15–0.25 per barrel, available on lease and service models rather than capital purchase . First units are proving out in Oman; ITSB brings the program to Asia-Pacific operators .

MEG & condensate filtration that operators can live with

On North Sea platforms, COMPAX cartridges engineered for hydrocarbon and glycol service replaced a swelling, collapsing incumbent: 2.4× the change-out differential pressure, fewer and larger elements, and change-outs the crew reported as significantly easier and quicker . The same engineering applies to MEG and condensate duty on Asia-Pacific developments.

Engineer questions

Asked before the enquiry

What outlet quality can FPSO produced water treatment achieve?
Pentair HRT recovers 99.98% of hydrocarbon ; a documented Middle East installation runs at roughly 5 ppm oil at outlet with TSS reduced to 1.4 mg/L . Containerized Pure Pack units deliver below 50 mg/L on a lease/service model .
Why do IGF units, hydrocyclones and walnut-shell filters struggle with produced water?
They rely on droplet size. The emulsified fraction of produced water is too fine to float or settle — it needs weeks of gravitational disengagement time . Coalescing technology like HRT captures and grows those droplets instead of waiting for them.
Does produced water treatment have to be a capital project?
No. HRT is modular and retrofittable into operating units , and Pure Pack is containerized and available on lease and service models at roughly US$0.15–0.25 per barrel treated .
Can recovered oil really pay for the system?
In the documented Middle East case, separated oil recovered as sellable product was worth about US$400,000 per year at 180 ppm inlet concentration .
Who delivers Pentair produced water treatment for FPSOs in Asia-Pacific?
ITSB — the authorized Pentair Oil & Gas Separations agent for Malaysia & Asia-Pacific — engineers, installs and supports HRT and Pure Pack for FPSO and platform duty, backed by 30 years of offshore separation work in the region.
