Foaming is a contamination problem wearing a chemical disguise

Solids and ingressed hydrocarbon in the amine loop drive foaming, foul exchangers and column internals, carry amine out with the acid gas, and — worst case — destabilize the downstream sulfur recovery unit to the point of plant shutdown or emissions violations . The standard responses (antifoam dosing, derating throughput, ever-faster cartridge change-outs) treat symptoms and become their own operating cost .

Why does our amine system keep foaming?
Foaming is almost always driven by contamination: fine solids and ingressed hydrocarbon stabilize the foam. Antifoam chemical suppresses the symptom; removing the solids (MPAX/COMPAX filtration) and the emulsified hydrocarbon (HRT) removes the cause .
What is the difference between MPAX and COMPAX?
Both are Pentair coreless particle elements sealing onto a reusable core. MPAX is the current M-pleat generation, delivering 50% longer lifetime or 20% higher flow than COMPAX at Beta 5000 efficiency . COMPAX remains current and widely installed .
Do we need new filter vessels to upgrade?
No. Reusable stainless support cores install into existing housings once; coreless elements then seal onto them with O-rings. The documented refinery upgrade on this page was done entirely in existing housings .
How does amine contamination shut down a sulfur recovery unit?
Hydrocarbon and amine carryover in the acid gas destabilizes the Claus furnace, cokes reactor beds and raises pressure drop — in many cases forcing SRU shutdown, which can mean shutting down the gas plant or refinery itself, or violating sulfur emissions limits .
